"What do foster youth think about permanency?" CPYP, in partnership with the California Youth Connection (CYC), held interviews and focus groups with several foster youth to talk about this question. This document explores some of their answers

Orbit control of asteroids in libration point orbits for resource exploitation

The fascinating idea of shepherding asteroids for science and resource utilisation is being considered as a very credible concept in a not too distant future. Past studies have identified asteroids which could be injected into manifolds which wind onto periodic orbits around collinear Lagrangian points of the Sun-Earth system, by means of a low-cost manoeuvre. However, the periodic orbits as well as the manifolds are highly unstable, and small errors in the capture manoeuvre would bring to complete mission failure, with potential danger of collision with the Earth itself. The main source of injection error in position and velocity is the epistemic uncertainty of the asteroid mass, which cannot be measured directly. For this reason, asteroid orbit control will be a strict requirement for such mission. This paper investigates the controllability of some asteroids during the transfer and along the period orbits, assuming the use of a solar-electric low-thrust engine. The control scheme is based on a linear quadratic regulator. A stochastic simulation with a Monte Carlo approach is used to simulate a range of different perturbed initial conditions. Results show that only a small subset of the considered combinations of trajectories/asteroids are reliably controllable, and therefore controllability must be taken into account in the selection of potential targets

External fluctuations in front dynamics with inertia: The overdamped limit

    Get PDF
We study the dynamics of fronts when both inertial effects and external fluctuations are taken into account. Stochastic fluctuations are introduced as multiplicative noise arising from a control parameter of the system. Contrary to the non-inertial (overdamped) case, we find that important features of the system, such as the velocity selection picture, are not modified by the noise. We then compute the overdamped limit of the underdamped dynamics in a more careful way, finding that it does not exhibit any effect of noise either. Our result poses the question as to whether or not external noise sources can be measured in physical systems of this kind.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal

    Optimal State-Contingent Unemployment Insurance

Since the probability of finding a job is affected not only by individual effort but also by the aggregate state of the economy, designing unemployment insurance payments conditional on the business cycle could be valuable. This paper answers a fundamental question related to this issue: How should the payments vary with the aggregate state of the economy?Unemployment Insurance; Aggregate Fluctuations; Recursive Contracts and Moral Hazard

Dynamics of drive systems for wind energy conversion

    Get PDF
Calculations are performed to determine the dynamic effects of mechanical power transmission from the nacelle of a horizontal axis wind machine to the ground or to an intermediate level. It is found that resonances are likely at 2 or 4/REV, but they occur at low power only, and seem easily correctable. Large reductions are found in the harmonic torque inputs to the generator at powers near rated

Hawking Radiation in String Theory and the String Phase of Black Holes

The quantum string emission by Black Holes is computed in the framework of the `string analogue model' (or thermodynamical approach), which is well suited to combine QFT and string theory in curved backgrounds (particulary here, as black holes and strings posses intrinsic thermal features and temperatures). The QFT-Hawking temperature T_H is upper bounded by the string temperature T_S in the black hole background. The black hole emission spectrum is an incomplete gamma function of (T_H - T_S). For T_H << T_S, it yields the QFT-Hawking emission. For T_H \to T_S, it shows highly massive string states dominate the emission and undergo a typical string phase transition to a microscopic `minimal' black hole of mass M_{\min} or radius r_{\min} (inversely proportional to T_S) and string temperature T_S. The semiclassical QFT black hole (of mass M and temperature T_H) and the string black hole (of mass M_{min} and temperature T_S) are mapped one into another by a `Dual' transform which links classical/QFT and quantum string regimes. The string back reaction effect (selfconsistent black hole solution of the semiclassical Einstein equations with mass M_+ (radius r_+) and temperature T_+) is computed. Both, the QFT and string black hole regimes are well defined and bounded: r_{min} leq r_+ \leq r_S, M_{min} \leq M_+ \leq M, T_H \leq T_+ \leq T_S. The string `minimal' black hole has a life time tau_{min} \simeq \frac{k_B c}{G \hbar} T^{-3}_S.Comment: LaTex, 31 pages, no figure
